Living with poor vision should not be a viable option. If you’re ready to correct your vision, but you still have reservations about procedures like LASIK, this article will help. We’ve been providing LASIK service for a long time and often hear many of the same things that seem to cause people to be nervous. But don’t worry! Although your fear is understandable, you have nothing to worry about! Here are the most common fears about LASIK and how to overcome them.
1. Can LASIK make me blind?
This is by far the most common reservation about having a LASIK procedure. Many people struggle with the thought of having a laser pointed at their eye!
The truth of the matter is that LASIK is extremely safe. Just look at this statistic. Of the millions of LASIK procedures that have been performed, less than one percent have complications. And of all the complications that do arise, total blindness is virtually unheard-of. LASIK is a surgical procedure and therefore has some risk involved, but the small percentage of non-successes shouldn’t deter you from exploring LASIK as a possibility.
2. Do I have to be awake during LASIK and does the procedure hurt?
Patients often assume that LASIK is going to be painful, and the idea of being awake during the procedure sounds less than pleasant. Though it’s true you do have to be awake during the procedure, LASIK is virtually pain-free. Before the procedure, you’ll receive numbing eye drops that will prevent you from any discomfort. You can also request a mild sedative to help calm you before the procedure begins. Most patients report that they felt a slight pressure or vibration, but not pain.
3. I’m afraid of the unknown.
Complications and pain are very common reservations when thinking about having a LASIK procedure. But for others, simply not knowing the unknown is frightening.
To help overcome any fear of having LASIK, you can learn more about what to expect during the procedure. Once you learn how it works and the timeframe in which it’s completed, you might find that it’s not as scary or complicated as you thought.
Having reservations about LASIK or any vision correction procedure is not uncommon. But, if you are ready to see better, LASIK should definitely be something that you explore. It’s a safe and quick procedure.
